That truly happened to my friends and I :

We went to Amsterdam. Our driver and translator had had an english group before us.
Our translator let us get in the bus and told us in a very-well good french :D :
"Laissez-moi vous introduire le chauffeur" ( let me introduce you to the driver )

That was very funny and 40 of us started laughing.     The driver was amazed and didn't understand.  :heink:

Do you mean that it would be correct only if he'd said "He went to the US... this week end" (for instance)?
Indeed. You're right if we are talking about academic language. But in everyday language, you don't "need" to. Let's say the "anglo-saxon pragmatism", which always makes long stories short, would induce that shorter and faster tense. Don't you agree?

I totally agree. That's what contractions are made for  :jap:

 He went >> 2 syllables
 He's been >> 2 syllables, too

Some people have a correct (I would'nt say academic) language in everyday discussions. Of course many Americans or Brittish make a lot of mistakes but in general, the use of the preterite or present perfect is respected. The meaning of a sentence is not the same with the first one or the other. ;)

"I've been to Canada" is more often heard than "I went to Canada" :jap:

Pantry c'est plutôt un garde manger. Dans les maisons victoriennes, le "pantry était en général sous l'escalier avec un vasistas sur l'arrière cour.

[:ahoui] You are right. I tried to remember in what kind of conversation I could have heard that.

To get back to Wild Wind example:

 - Did you hear from Thierry lateley?
 - Yes! He went to the US. He called me. What a nice guy!

And that would sound so totally incorrect that most of the people could not use it.
 Sorry. And sorry Cafuron

The context is very important for the use of the tenses in English :jap:

/!\ >>> Have you heard from Thierry lately ?

Here, "he went to the US" will be understood as >he is still is in the US and that he called you from there  :)
